The Artists Special

If you’ve swung by Monteiths over the month of August and enjoyed our festival lunch menu, there’s a good chance you’ve had one of our Artists Special Monkey Shoulder cocktails. This art deco inspired sipper was created in the 1920’s at The Artist’s Club in Paris and really channels the roaring twenties vibe.

This was a massively popular drink in the 1920’s, its popularity comparable to that of a mojito today. The first record of the drink is found in Harry & Wynn’s book ‘Barflies & Cocktails’ printed in 1927 –a massively influential book that was described by Harry Craddock, author of the Savoy Cocktail Book, as “the genuine ink of inspiration”.

It’s an easy (and delicious) drink to make with a rich fruitiness that marries well to the whisky flavours. Simply pour all ingredients into a shaker and hard shake before double straining into a chilled coupe and garnishing with redcurrants. The drink can also be served long by increasing all ingredients by an extra half measure and replacing the coupe glass with a tall glass filled with ice.
