The Balvenie

We debated long and hard whether or not to feature The Balvenie in our recipe book –on the one hand making a cocktail with this fantastic liquid seems sacrilegious but on the other, we wanted to let everyone know what a great drink it is.
The fact that you’re reading this rather gives the game away – we decided to feature The Balvenie as it is simply too tasty not to rave about. That said, we played it safe and will only be adding a splash of water or a cube of ice in this easy to follow ‘recipe’.
Founded by William Grant in 1892 the brand hails from Dufftown in Speyside and is the only remaining distillery in the Highlands to still floor malt its barley. Floor malting is the traditional method of preparing barley for fermentation and this is just one aspect of the brand’s amazing heritage. The Balvenie prides itself on its range of rare crafts: The brand grows its own barley onsite, and employs an artisan coppersmith to work on the stills as well as a team of coopers to produce their barrels.
The proud history of the brand has been carefully curated over the years by their ‘malt master’ , David Stewart, who has worked in the business for over 50 years. He has carefully crafted a ramge of outstanding spirits that share a rich, luxuriously smooth character that’s enhanced by the brand’s distinctive honeyed finish. David uses different cask types and ages of spirit, to develop new interpretations of The Balvenie's classic character.
Our recipe for the perfect scotch then? A glass of 12 year old The Balvenie DoubleWood with a splash of water. Sometimes the simplest recipes give you the most pleasure.
If you’d like to learn more about The Balvenie why not attend our complimentary tasting evening on Wednesday 23rd October. Email murray@monteithsrestaurant.co.uk for tickets.
