Hot Buttered Rum

Although the worst of winter is over there is still a distinct chill in the air. The bar team at Monteiths have been keeping our customers warm over the last few weeks with this variation on a punch serve which dates from the late 19th century. Our Hot Buttered Rum is made with Sailor Jerry rum and will warm the cockles of the coldest heart!

The drink has its origins in Colonial era America but has been updated for the modern palate. It’s smooth caramel texture and mouth feel works well with the spiced, candied finish that comes from the Sailor Jerry and angostura combination.

To make it at home simply combine the ingredients below in a saucepan over a mild heat and whisk gently. Don’t bring the mix to the boil but simmer gently. If you have a ‘milk frother’ lurking in the cupboard from your Christmas stocking then use it to create a frothy head once you decant the mix into a blazer mug.

Garnish with an orange twist and serve warm.

50ml Sailor Jerry
Small nob of butter
10ml cinnamon syrup
15ml boiling water
1 dash angostura bitters
