Orkney Brewery Dark Island

We’re proud to introduce the latest addition to our back bar – Orkney Dark Island, a craft Scottish beer produced in small batches. This sumptuous beer is brewed in Orkney with traditional values and a slower pace of life in mind - characteristics which the makers believe impact its flavour! The end result is a truly excellent beer that has won CAMRA’s “Champion Beer Of Scotland” in its cask form twice before.

This traditional dark ale has a rich scent, with figs, dark chocolate & fruit all evident on the nose. In the glass the beer shows a rich and dark ruby colourway with a smooth white head. These great first impressions are more than matched by the beer’s taste. As soon as it hits the palate you are wiowed by a silky smooth nectar bursting with coffee-and-chocolate flavours. This initial taste sensation is followed by figs, dates and dried fruits, with a very appealing, lingering aftertaste of fruits and hop bitterness.

The key ingredients in this beer are the chocolate malt, crystal malt and wheat which combine to give it a full bodied yet smooth texture and balance the flavour between maltiness and sweetness. Two separate hops work well with the malt flavours to bring the fruit & figs finish mentioned above.

Maker Norman Sinclair suggests that pate, red meat & strong cheese make for the perfect accompaniment and we’d have to agree. This has fast become a favourite amongst the Monteiths team and we’d encourage you to sample it soon.
Look out for tasting notes on the brewery’s other product - Dark Island Reserve - coming soon.
