Dark Island Reserve

Last week we published tasting notes for Orkney Brewery’s “Dark Island” beer – the article had a really positive response and we’ve had lots of interested drinkers trying it. If you liked the sound of “Dark Island”, wait until you hear about the “Dark island Reserve” that’s also available at Monteiths.

The Reserve was created as a super-premium beer designed to outdo any other product in the marketplace and we’d have to say, it’s succeeded. Described by many as the “Rolls Royce” of craft beers, this extraordinary tipple is a must try for booze aficionados.

The beer uses Orkney’s iconic Dark Island ale (a fantastic starting point) and matures it for three months in aged malt whisky casks from the island. The beer is created on a very small scale and is hugely exclusive as a result. We were delighted to be invited to stock the product and think it tastes amazing.

The beer is bottled by hand and labelled with the individual batch number. Expect classic Dark Island flavours of smooth roast malt, dark chocolate, caramel, figs and dates combined with vanilla, spice and bitter orange flavours from the wood and whisky.

At 10% ABV this is a beer designed to be savoured, we’ve been ‘sampling’ it with our cheeseboard after dinner and it’s proved exceedingly popular. As stock availability is so limited we’re given a small allocation to sell each month so we’d recommend you pop in and try it before the bar runs dry!
